Safe Education for Children with Type 1 Diabetes

A national support system for safe and inclusive education of children living with Type 1 Diabetes in Kazakhstan.

We designed a practical, scalable and inclusive support system that connects families, schools, kindergartens, healthcare professionals, educational materials and public policy.

The problem

Children with Type 1 Diabetes often face barriers in kindergartens and schools because staff are not prepared to support daily diabetes management. Parents may be forced to stay nearby throughout the day, teachers may be afraid of responsibility, and children may be excluded from ordinary educational life.

Our solution

The solution is not a single training — it is a set of connected elements that reinforce each other.

01

Adapted KiDS materials

Educational content adapted for Kazakhstan's schools and kindergartens.

02

Training for school nurses

Practical, step-by-step preparation for daily diabetes management at school.

03

Training for kindergarten staff

The same safety grounding, adapted for early-childhood settings.

04

Guidance for teachers

Clear, non-technical guidance so responsibility no longer feels like a barrier.

05

Resources for parents

Materials and support so families are not left to manage this alone.

06

Awareness for classmates

Age-appropriate materials that build understanding and reduce exclusion.

07

Cooperation with state institutions

Working with education and health authorities on adoption at scale.

08

Advocacy for regulation

Pushing for policy that supports children with Type 1 Diabetes structurally.

09

Continuous family support

Ongoing support that does not end after a single session.

System design

This is not a one-time training. It is a designed system connecting every participant around the child.

Before / after

Before

  • Parents had to personally control diabetes care during school hours.
  • Teachers lacked practical knowledge.
  • School nurses had no simple step-by-step materials.
  • Kindergartens were afraid to accept children with Type 1 Diabetes.
  • Families faced isolation and uncertainty.

After

  • Educational institutions receive practical tools.
  • Staff understand basic diabetes safety.
  • Parents receive guidance and support.
  • Children can participate in ordinary educational life.
  • The model can be scaled across Kazakhstan.
